The Rabbits – Day 32

Originally published January 13, 2018

The little bubs are growing up sooo fast. Fluffy (the big, black fluffiest one) has been weaned for days, refusing to drink milk and STILL gaining weight. Now I’ve left for work, Meeka’s updating me on how they’re going. Apparently the Dark Grey is also weaned, with Buttercup (the biggest creamy) close behind, followed by Little Black (not so little anymore, he almost looks like Fluffy!). Cookie and Goopy are drinking less than they used to, but still 8-10ml, so they’re getting there. Lymeria still drinks a LOT, and is started to look chubby almost. She’ll be weaned soon too, though we might have to force weaning on her if she doesn’t start doing it herself soon. The biggest rabbit can’t be the last off milk!

Lymeria

We had some people come around to visit them the day before I left for work (Day 28). One family put a deposit down on Buttercup, and after leaving and having a conversation amongst themselves, they’re going to take a second one as well, depending on who’s left and what gender Buttercup ends up as (they’re interested in Little Black mostly). Buttercup is going to a couple with two kids, she’ll be the oldest kid’s pet (a girl about 5-6, I think). The other child, a little boy, was much rougher with the rabbits.

Buttercup

The other family to come visit was a father with his two daughters (both in, or almost in, their teens). He didn’t seem too impressed with the idea of bunnies, though the girls fell in love with Goopy, and also liked Lymeria and Fluffy. Before meeting them, the girl was the only one I spoke too. I feel like she set the whole thing up without talking to her dad, and dragged him into it unwillingly. Not sure if they’ll manage to convince him to get Goopy, but I hope they do. They seemed like a lovely home for our ol’ Goops.

Goopy

Meanwhile Cookie is worming her way into Luke’s heart. He bought a hutch for her, and is buying the next load of hay. He went all protective over her when the visitors came, ESPECIALLY when the little boy manhandled her. He was quite rough, but none of the bunnies were hurt, and his parents mostly controlled him (though not entirely sure why they brought him along in the first place). He will not be great with animals, he’s just too easily excited, and moves too much without being aware of what he’s doing and who he is potentially hurting. I’m seriously hoping he isn’t allowed near Buttercup, though judging off the girls overly timid attempts at holding her future rabbit I doubt there’ll be any unsupervised handling, thankfully.

Cookie

We still need a home for Dark Grey. I can’t recall if I mentioned his injury. It seems like he’s badly injured his hip. We thought he’d die that night, yet he pulled through. This was more than a week ago, and now he’s using his leg again (before he wouldn’t touch it to the ground at all, let alone move on it), though it still isn’t sitting quite right. He still doesn’t use it properly, and I’m not sure anyone’s going to take him on as a pet with a pre-existing injury like that.

Then there’s the fact that with everything going on, we still haven’t told the rentals. We are idiots. We are hoping to sell the babies before the next inspection and just ask to keep Cookie. But now we also must ask to keep the kitten. Yes, we also have a kitten. Well, Meeka and Jarrad do. I was called out to a farm I worked at; a kitten had been found in the hay. I asked Meeka if we could have “one more?” and she said no more animals, but I didn’t say what it was. I told her once I’d picked it up that we’d keep it over-night, so she could see it (she was working all that day), then surrender it in the morning.

Little Black

That morning seems a long way off. Oh yeah, and we also have a mamma rabbit with four babies (she was pregnant but finally gave birth, one was still born but the others survived; three dark ones and a light one).

Too many animals, we could start a sanctuary. It’s actually quite a tempting idea…
